Learning from the automotive industry: Factory planning seminar in Günzburg

How factory planners can use TRICAD MS even in the tender stage and which interfaces to simulation tools or design applications are available – the forty-six participants of the first VenturisIT factory planning seminar in Günzburg on 30 January now know the answers to this. After lunch, Virtual Logistics and Material Flow Planning was on the agenda as a further topic in the Volkswagen digital factory. Lessons learned: What the automotive industry demonstrates has a role model function for all branches of industry – and can be adapted appropriately by any factory planner to his profession. The impressive uses: The factory goes into operation 30 percent faster than normal – this is not theory, this is reality confirmed by the automotive industry.

The speaker Janette Ehlert reported in the afternoon on the determining of platform areas. If the steel structure has been generated in a different program, this can be imported via the SDNF interface. The steel structure produced in TRICAD MS can be exported via the SDNF interface in exactly the same way. Janette Ehlert addressed the question of when ‘step-by-step’ and when ‘simple platform’ should be used for platform generation: ‘Simple platform’ is advisable when quick drafts are necessary in the tender phase. If, however, an exact model with precise positioning of supports/hangers or location of track supports and cross-bracings or penetrations for external systems is required, it makes more sense to use the ‘step-by-step’ method for the platform. The position of the steel beams can then be specified exactly to the structural engineer who then gives the profile cross sections in return.

Ms Ehlert then also supplied information on the options for calculating envelopes and tractrices. The results of envelope and tractrix calculations are used for logistics planning, for planning of lugger trains, the erection on mounting surfaces, for supermarkets, and generally for deliveries by truck. Envelope curves are also used in the area of conveyor technology, primarily for overhead conveyor systems such as electrical monorail. A further application area for envelope curves and tractrices is the planning of light rail system tracks in cities (used for example by the SSB Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG).

Anyone who has combined the planning of individual disciplines or 3D models from component suppliers knows the problems of overloading: The factory model file becomes unwieldy, even powerful servers react with long response times. The lecture given by Markus Nimmerrichter about the options for data reduction with the help of the equipment layout module from TRICAD MS was guaranteed to attract the attention of all those attending the seminar.
